| Graduate Program’s Educational Objectives
The mission of the Chemical Engineering Graduate Program is to educate students in preparation for careers of professional practice and academic research for the betterment of society. Students are trained to design, develop and control chemical engineering processes and to carry out research studies to contribute to the development and dissemination of science and technology at national and international levels and to bring solutions to industrial problems. General Information The students who have completed the Chemical Engineering Master of Science Program and the Chemical Engineering Doctorate Program are awarded the degrees of M.S. and Ph.D., respectively. The requirements that the students should fulfill in the Doctorate Program in order to be awarded the Ph.D. degree are:
The normal period of education in the Master of Science Program is four academic terms. The students may graduate before this time in case they have fulfilled the requirements given above. Six academic terms is the maximum allowable time for the completion of the graduation requirements. The normal period of education in the Doctorate Program is eight academic terms. The minimum and maximum allowable times for the completion of the graduation requirements in this program are 5 and 12 academic terms, respectively. Program Modes There is one major Graduate Program of Chemical Engineering in ITU, which comprises the Master of Science and Doctorate Programs. The courses are given on the term basis and each academic year consists of the fall and spring terms. Excluding the final exams, each of the fall and spring terms is 14 week long. The students may take courses from other universities with the consent of their advisors and the Board of the Institute of Science and Technology. Courses The Chemical Engineering Graduate Program is designed to provide the students with advanced knowledge on the fundamentals of mathematics and chemical engineering and to help the students in improving their analytical and practical skills. The students have the opportunity to specialize on topics related to their thesis in the Doctorate Program. The courses in the Graduate Program are either continuations in advanced level of the undergraduate courses or are about specific subjects in chemical engineering. The four basic engineering courses in the Graduate Program, namely, Engineering Mathematics, Transport Phenomena I, Transport Phenomena II and Numerical Analysis are compulsory. The elective courses in the program aim to provide the students with information about specific and topical subjects in chemical engineering. The nineteen elective courses are: Optimization Methods, Fluidization Technology, Principles and Technology of Drying, Solid Fuel Conversion Technologies, Advanced Process Control I-II, Surface Chemistry, Carbon & Carbon Related Materials, Enzyme Kinetics, Advanced Chemical Reaction Engineering, Advanced Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, Advanced Stage-wise Operations I-II, Computer Aided Process Design, Solid-Liquid Phase Equilibria in Process Design, Heterogeneous Reaction Kinetics, CFD Applications in Chemical Engineering, Informatics for Chemical Engineering, Industrial Crystallization. Ten of the above courses (written in italics) are in English. Six of the courses, namely, Process Control II, Advanced Chemical Reaction Engineering, Advanced Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, Advanced Stage-wise Operations II, Principles and Technology of Drying and Optimization Methods are intended for the students in the doctorate level (600 coded). In these highly advanced courses, the students will be able to specialize in specific subjects related to chemical engineering. The students in the Master of Science Program may take the 600 coded courses with the consent of their advisors. Students coming from departments other than chemical engineering and who meet the criteria for admission are welcome. These students may have to take additional courses in the undergraduate level. Thesis In the Master of Science Program and the Doctorate Program, students should prepare a thesis and defend it against a jury. In the Doctorate Program Committees of Thesis Inspection are established in order to check for the suitability and development of the theses. The doctorate thesis should make an original contribution to the development of science and technology. Advisors In both the Master of Science and Doctorate Programs, each student selects an advisor under the guidance of whom he/she carries out his/her thesis studies. Evaluation A grading system based on 4.0 is used for the evaluation of the students in the courses. FF is the failing grade. Students who receive a BB or a higher grade from a course are considered to have satisfactorily completed that course. The grade-point equivalents of the letter grades used throughout the university are given below.
A student must earn a GPA above 3.00 in order to be able to graduate from the Master of Science Program. More detailed information about the evaluation of the courses may be found at the web site of ITU Institute of Science and Technology: http://www.fbe.itu.edu.tr Faculty16 professors, 14 associate professors, 1 assistant professor and 4 lecturers constitute the faculty of the Chemical Engineering Department. There are also 26 teaching and research assistants, 2 expert technicians and 2 technicians in the department. AdmissionApplications to the Chemical Engineering Graduate Program are generally made at the end of the spring term. In case places are available, it may also be possible to apply to the program at the end of the fall term. The students are admitted according to their overall performances determined by their undergraduate GPA (and also the M.S. GPA for the Doctorate Program), the score they have obtained in the LES examination (minimum acceptable score=45), their knowledge of English and their performance in the interview held at the department. In the last five years, the maximum number of students to be admitted in the Chemical Engineering Graduate Program has been determined as 40 and 15 for the Master of Science Program and the Doctorate Program, respectively. These numbers are generally lower for the spring term. In order to start their education in the Master of Science Program, the students have to submit evidence regarding their knowledge of English (standard test results recognized by the University Senate) or they have to demonstrate sufficiency in the English Proficiency Exam (minimum passing score=60) administered by the School of Foreign Languages. Important dates of application, including the English Proficiency Exam, are announced by the Institute of Science and Technology in the Web and newspapers. The standard tests recognized by the Senate of ITU are ÜDS (65), TOEFL (513 (old), 183 (new)), IELTS (6.0). The students unable to demonstrate their sufficiency in English should obtain a passing score in one of the tests given above within one academic year; otherwise, they will be dismissed. |
